UV Applications for Life Sciences
- Disinfection – the most common application of UV in water treatment.
- TOC Reduction – the USP 31 regulations require an upper limit of 500ppb for TOC for both USP Purified Water and WFI. uvaquafine uses a powerful 185nm wavelength appropriately sized and designed to meet this application.
- Ozone Destruction – ozone is commonly used in the pretreatment area of a water system, as well as for sanitizing process and re-circulating systems.
- Chlorine/Chloramines Destruction - while the addition of chlorine and chloramines to city water may control bacteria levels, they have undesirable effects on the degradation of membrane filtration or RO. uvaquafine pioneered the technology of chlorine and chloramines destruction utilizing UV light in the pre-membrane filtration or RO make-up water stream.
UV Solutions for Adventitious Virus Clearance for Biopharmaceuticals
The risk of viral contamination of a biologics process can be costly to investigate and remediate, severely disrupting manufacturing.
This is driving biopharmaceutical manufacturers to employ mitigation strategies to deal with small non-enveloped viruses. Ultraviolet (UV) technology is an attractive solution for viral clearance (re: adventitious viruses), where other treatment options may be limited relative to cell culture biologics production.
uvaquafine has developing UV treatment technology solutions for the demanding requirements of cell culture biologics media. uvaquafine offers manufacturing and engineering expertise in the areas of optics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and analysis, bioassay validation and controls technology.

UV Solutions for Prevention of Nosocomial Legionella
uvaquafine UV Water Treatment technology is a proven solution for preventing nosocomial Legionella contamination of hospital water systems.
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious form of the bacteria Legionella, a pneumonia contracted by ingesting water that has been contaminated with the bacteria. Legionella bacteria are found naturally in the environment - usually water - and thrive in warm water, common for spas, cooling towers, hot water tanks, large plumbing systems, or parts of the large facility air conditioning systems.
Outbreaks of nosocomial Legionnaires disease might easily exist unnoticed in a hospital, resulting in patient illness or possible patient mortality. Hospital buildings have complex water systems increasing the risk for Legionella infection outbreaks.
Studies indicate implementing UV water treatment technology is a proven solution, as UV light inactivates the Legionnaire microbe by penetrating the cell wall and damaging the DNA, destroying its ability to reproduce.

UV Applications for Hospitals
- Cooling Towers - uvaquafine pioneered the technology utilizing UV light for chemical-free microbiological control for cooling tower applications.
- Fountains - UV disinfection of decorative fountains is a complimentary way of providing an effective method of inactivating a wide range of waterborne pathogens including Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Legionella.
- Laboratory/Research - A pharmaceutical water system could have several locations where UV equipment would be installed. Typical locations of installation would be post-carbon filter and pre-RO (reverse osmosis).
- Medical Devices - UV technology is used in many medical device applications including microbial-free water before non-heat chemical sterilization. uvaquafine partners with medical device manufactures, designing custom UV solutions to meet exacting product standards.
- Potable Water - the most common application of UV light in water treatment in globally. uvaquafine offers bioassay validated products, meeting strict regulatory drinking water requirements including USEPA, DVGW and NSF.
